Bolivia’s embattled president says will take a 50 percent salary cut

Sucre: Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz announced on Monday that he will cut his salary and those of his cabinet ministers by 50 percent in a direct bid to ease a spiraling political crisis.

Speaking at a public event in the constitutional capital of Sucre, Paz stated the dramatic pay cuts demonstrate the government's absolute “commitment to the country”. The surprise concession comes as Bolivia enters its fourth consecutive week of paralyzing social unrest and highway blockades.

Demonstrators are demanding Paz’s resignation over aggressive austerity measures, rising living costs, and the removal of a decades-old fuel subsidy. The protests have triggered severe supply-chain shortages, leaving major urban hubs like La Paz and El Alto entirely depleted of fuel, food, and basic hospital medicines.
