CARCAS: Venezuelan authorities have fired prison director Elvis Macuare Guerrero following a violent, multi-day inmate uprising triggered by severe torture allegations at a western penitentiary, officials confirmed on Monday.

The unrest erupted on Sunday at the Barinas Judicial Detention Center, where hundreds of common-law prisoners seized control of the facility. Chanting ‘no more torture,’ inmates set fire to mattresses and sheets, with several groups remaining huddled on the facility's roof on Monday during tense standoff negotiations.

Human rights NGO Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) revealed that despite being in his post for just one week, Guerrero had already established a ‘regime of terror’ consisting of systematic beatings, violent searches, and the deliberate destruction of personal property.

While the government dismissed Guerrero in an attempt to pacify the facility, the mutiny persisted. Security forces immediately initiated forced mass evacuations, busing out dozens of detainees, including over 100 female prisoners to alternative regional facilities.

Aggrieved relatives gathered outside the perimeter demanding transparency regarding the location and safety of their displaced family members.
