NGO reports new political prisoner death in Venezuela's custody

Caracas: The NGO Foro Penal reported that Jose Manuel Garcia, a political prisoner held since February, was found dead in Venezuelan police custody on May 10, 2026. Garcia, a former municipal councilor in Anaco, had previously denounced local corruption.
His body was transferred to a forensic institute in Barcelona to determine an official cause of death.
This incident marks the twentieth death of a political prisoner in Venezuelan custody since 2014. The death follows a recent government admission regarding the passing of another prisoner, Victor Hugo Quero Navas, nine months ago.
Despite a February amnesty following the ouster of former president Nicolas Maduro, human rights organizations estimate that approximately 500 political prisoners remain incarcerated in the country.
