Sarajevo: Former German minister Christian Schmidt confirmed his resignation as the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina after five years in the post.

Appointed in 2021 to oversee the Dayton peace agreement, Schmidt’s tenure was defined by his use of sweeping powers to sack officials and impose laws. However, his legitimacy was constantly challenged by Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, a Kremlin ally who dismissed him as a "tourist".

While the Office of the High Representative cited "significant progress" in national functionality, Schmidt’s departure may not be entirely voluntary.

Reports suggest that business interests linked to the Trump family, who have recently forged ties with Dodik, could be a contributing factor. Schmidt will remain until a successor is appointed to continue Bosnia's pursuit of Euro-Atlantic integration.
