A passenger aircraft carrying 49 people has gone missing over a remote area in Russia's Far East, sparking an urgent search and rescue operation.

The plane, an An-24 turboprop operated by Angara Airlines, vanished from radar just a few kilometers from Tynda Airport in the Amur region, according to a statement from Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations.

The aircraft had been in regular contact with air traffic controllers but suddenly lost all communication without sending any distress signal, Russian news agency TASS reported. There was no indication of any technical issues before the plane disappeared.

Authorities confirmed that among those onboard were six crew members and five children.

The town of Tynda, located about 5,170 kilometers east of Moscow and near the Chinese border, is surrounded by thick forests and rugged terrain, making rescue efforts more challenging. Teams have already been dispatched to the area to search for the missing aircraft.
