Sharp’s 4K smartphone screen boasts a pixel density of 806ppi

Sharp has revealed a 4K smartphone display that could find its way to the next generation of handsets.

The 5.5-inch IGZO screen boasts a resolution of 2,160 x 3,840 and offers a pixel density of 806ppi.

Samsung previously announced plans to adopt 4K smartphone display technology in 2015, which makes the Galaxy Note 5 a potential candidate for a screen like Sharp’s.

However, it is yet to be seen whether 4K handsets are likely to gain traction, given that the human eye can barely detect the resolution boost on a 5.5-inch screen.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 includes a 2K screen, which appears to display imagery with only marginally more clarity than 1080p due to the limited surface area.

There is also a dearth of native 4K content at present, although streaming services Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video have started supporting the standard.
