MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has promised severe military retaliation, accusing Ukraine of launching a "monstrous" drone strike on a student dormitory in Starobilsk, Russian-controlled Luhansk.

The overnight attack obliterated the top floors of the five-story hostel while dozens of students were asleep inside, leaving at least 6 dead, 48 injured, and 15 people missing under the rubble.

According to Moscow, Ukrainian forces deliberately deployed 16 explosive drones in three consecutive waves to maximize casualties at the civilian site.

Ukraine's military fiercely rejected allegations of targeting children. Kyiv countered that their precision munitions strictly targeted and neutralized an elite Russian drone command unit operating out of the facility.

The deadly escalation has rapidly shifted to the global stage, triggering an immediate emergency session of the United Nations Security Council as both warring nations trade fierce accusations of international humanitarian law violations.
