Filipino killed in accident, runaway driver arrested

Manama : A Filipino man was killed in a horrific traffic accident near Sitra on Tuesday morning. The 35-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital, as confirmed by Interior Ministry.

General Director of Traffic Shaikh Nasser bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa explained in a statement later, “A traffic accident involving three vehicles occurred in the morning on Riffa-bound Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Subah Highway in Sitra led to the death of a 35 years old Asian man.”

Shaikh Nasser also said that “other drivers and passengers sustained injuries, including a Bahraini, who sustained serious injuries.”

Sources confirmed that three vehicles were involved in the accident, including a minibus with five passengers onboard and two sedans.

The deceased was identified as Wilson Martinez Reyes, according to the Philippines Embassy in Bahrain.

Mr Reyes,  a BMMI employee, was travelling in a red sedan when the accident occurred around 8am. The third car involved in the accident was driven by the Bahraini citizen.

The vehicles had to be cut open to extricate the people stuck inside due to the impact of the collision.

Bahraini driver arrested

DT News has learnt that one of the drivers, who was apparently the main cause of the collision, had fled the scene.

However, Shaikh Nasser confirmed later, “The Bahraini driver, aged 20, who caused the accident, was arrested after he fled the site and entered a house in Wadyan village in Sitra.”

“He seemed as if he was under the influence of intoxicants.

Legal proceedings were taken against him after his injuries were treated,” the General Director added, while calling upon road users to follow traffic rules for the safety of all.
