Officer killed in shooting at US military center

Chicago

An officer was killed in a shooting at a military recruiting center in Tennessee on Thursday, US officials said.

Multiple victims were being treated in a hospital, WRCB news reported, saying that gunshots were reported at a mall, a naval reserve center and another location.

"We have reports of an officer down," Chattanooga mayor Andy Berke told reporters.

"The suspect is also down."

A college and the military base were on lockdown following the shooting.

"We are looking at every possible avenue -- whether it was terrorism, whether it was domestic, international or whether it was a simple criminal act," FBI special agent Ed Reinhold said.

Reinhold said the shooter was an area resident and that the FBI would use every means possible to "determine the cause or the reason why he carried out this attack."

Local media identified the shooter as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez. MSNBC said he was a naturalized citizen originally from the Middle East.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press said he was a soil engineering specialist working for the city.

The Marine Corps confirmed that all four victims were killed at a Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center. The other shooting, at the hands of the same man, occurred at a recruitment center several miles away.
