Chennai: After spending over three decades behind bars, A.G. Perarivalan, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has begun a new career as an advocate.
Arrested at the age of 19 in 1991 for allegedly supplying a nine-volt battery used in the bomb, Perarivalan spent 31 years as a prisoner before being released by the Supreme Court in May 2022.
During his long incarceration, he pursued multiple degrees, eventually studying law at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Law College after his release.
Now 54, Perarivalan officially enrolled as an advocate at the Madras High Court on April 27, 2026. He stated that his ambition is not personal fame but to provide legal aid to undertrials and poor life convicts who lack access to representation. His transition from death row to the bar highlights his resilience and goal to reform the criminal justice system from within.
