Guerrillas claim deadly Colombia attack, say it was an 'error'

Bogotá: Dissident guerrillas from the Central General Command (EMC), an offshoot of the defunct FARC rebel army, have claimed responsibility for a highway bomb attack in southwestern Colombia that killed 21 people and injured 56 others. The group, led by the nation's most-wanted suspect, Ivan Mordisco, characterized the explosion as a ‘tactical error’ during clashes with the army, stating they assume political responsibility for the "unjustifiable" incident.

The attack occurred in the Cauca department and represents the largest single loss of life from a rebel bombing in Colombia since 2003.

Coming just one month before the May 31 presidential elections, the violence has escalated diplomatic tensions; President Gustavo Petro labeled it a ‘terrorist’’ act designed to sabotage the vote and traded unproven accusations of regional interference with Ecuadorian leader Daniel Noboa.
