Virginia: A U.S. federal jury in Virginia has convicted Mohammad Sharifullah, a member of the Islamic State Khorasan (ISK), for his role in the devastating 2021 suicide bombing at Kabul’s international airport.
The attack, which occurred during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, claimed the lives of at least 170 Afghans and 13 American service members. Sharifullah, also known as Jafar, was found guilty of conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist organization.
Prosecutors revealed that Sharifullah scouted the specific route used by the suicide bomber to reach the densely packed crowds at the airport gates.
Beyond the 2021 attack, authorities linked him to a decade of terrorism, including the 2016 bombing of Canadian embassy guards in Kabul and providing weapons training to the gunmen involved in the March 2024 Crocus City Hall attack near Moscow. Extradited from Pakistan in 2025, he now faces up to 20 years in federal prison.
