Washington DC: US President Donald Trump has dispatched envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv carrying a new proposal to end the war in Ukraine.

The mission represents Washington's latest initiative to break a diplomatic stalemate in Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II.

The negotiators are scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow before traveling to Kyiv for discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump emphasised that the duo will assess whether tangible progress toward a peace agreement can be reached.

The high-stakes trip marks the first time Witkoff and Kushner have visited war-torn Kyiv since Trump returned to office with a pledge to resolve the conflict. Both envoys have previously engaged in ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and Iran alongside prior trips to Moscow.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the upcoming talks by proposing a reciprocal ceasefire regarding airstrikes for the full duration of the envoys' visit.

The diplomatic push unfolds amid heavy attacks, including a Russian drone strike on Ukraine's security service headquarters in central Kyiv.
