Chapel Hill: The European Union and the United States are closer on technology regulation than their public disputes would imply, according to EU tech director Henna Virkkunen.

Virkkunen stated that both sides are increasingly targeting the same technological companies and behaviours, albeit Europe normally depends on regulation and the US frequently utilises court proceedings and enforcement efforts.

She cited increased agreement on online child safety, claiming that some US policies aimed at reducing social media risks for children are already addressed by EU regulations.

On artificial intelligence, Virkkunen defended the EU's regulatory stance, admitting that some laws should be simplified. She also mentioned that US states are implementing hundreds of AI-related policies, emphasising the need for a unified framework.
