Nine Dead, 15 Trapped After India Tunnel Collapse

New Delhi: At least nine workers have died, and around 15 remain trapped after a tunnel collapsed at an under-construction hydroelectric project in northeastern India. The disaster occurred on Monday in the Himalayan state of Sikkim along the Teesta River.
Disaster management officials reported that between 25 and 27 workers were initially trapped deep inside. Rescuers have recovered nine bodies so far as emergency personnel work around the clock.
Authorities believe the collapse was triggered by a deep underground blast, likely caused by natural gas buildup following heavy monsoon rains. However, the exact cause remains under active investigation.
Hazardous methane gas leaking from rock formations is creating severe obstacles for rescue teams. Only personnel equipped with breathing apparatus can safely enter the dangerous tunnel atmosphere.
A specialized team trained in mining accidents has been flown in to lead oxygen-supported operations. Environmentalists warn that rapid infrastructure development continues to destabilize the fragile Himalayan landscape.
