FIFA Investigates Argentina After World Cup Final Clashes

Zurich: FIFA has launched an investigation into Argentina's conduct following the team's heated clashes with Spain after the World Cup final, with players, coaching staff and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) facing possible disciplinary action.

FIFA's disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the incidents that unfolded after Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain at MetLife Stadium. Those found responsible could face suspensions, while the AFA could also be fined.

Several Argentina players and staff, including Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, were seen involved in confrontations with Spain's players during the post-match celebrations. FIFA later confirmed that Paredes was not sent off during the match despite an initial error on its commentator information system.

The investigation will also consider whether the actions breached FIFA's disciplinary code relating to fair play and conduct that brings football into disrepute. The appointed prosecutor has the authority to recommend sanctions, including worldwide bans where appropriate.

The probe comes as Argentina is already facing potential disciplinary action over a banner supporting the country's claim to the Falkland Islands, displayed by players after their World Cup semi-final victory over England. FIFA has not said when its investigation into either matter will be completed.
