Hanoi: Authorities announced on Saturday that flash floods and landslides caused by days of intense rain have killed four people in northern Vietnam. Several people suffered injuries as well, while rescue teams continued searching for around four others reported missing.
The most affected area was Lai Chau province, where floodwaters swept through a mountainous village, destroying homes, damaging roads and cutting off access to several communities. Rivers overflowed and landslides blocked important routes, flooding hundreds of hectares of rice fields and crops and killing cattle.
Heavy rain will likely continue in some regions of the north, increasing the risk of more severe flooding and landslides in hilly areas, according to Vietnam's weather agency. Local authorities evacuated vulnerable people and sent emergency teams as rescue and relief efforts continue.
