Trump Threatens New Canada Tariffs as Wildfire Smoke Chokes Northern US

Washington: US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on Canada, accusing it of failing to prevent wildfires that have sent thick smoke across large parts of the northern United States.
In a social media post, Trump claimed the US was being "invaded" by polluted air and blamed Canada for what he described as poor forest management. He said he would speak with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney over the issue.
Canada is battling about 955 active wildfires, with more than 190 burning in Ontario, many of them out of control. The fires have destroyed nearly three million hectares of land and triggered hazardous air quality alerts across several US states, disrupting flights, outdoor events and daily life.
Canadian officials rejected Trump's criticism, saying the two countries have long cooperated in tackling wildfires. Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged the US to send firefighting assistance instead of criticism, while Carney said climate change is a shared global challenge.
Scientists also disputed claims that Canada alone was responsible, saying extreme heat, dry conditions and climate change have fuelled the fires, while smoke naturally travels across borders depending on wind patterns.
