Starmer Under Pressure to Quit as Burnham Emerges as Successor

London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing growing pressure to step down, with UK media reporting he could soon announce plans to leave office as Labour MP Andy Burnham prepares a leadership bid.

Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, is set to take his seat in parliament after winning a key by-election last week, making him eligible to contest the Labour leadership.

Reports said more than 100 Labour MPs have urged Starmer to resign following months of poor polling, policy setbacks and disappointing election results. Several senior ministers have also reportedly questioned his future.

Burnham, a former cabinet minister, has positioned himself as an alternative to the embattled prime minister, warning after his by-election victory that Labour had a 'final chance to change'.

If Starmer steps down this year, Britain would have its seventh prime minister in a decade.
