TEXAS: A 76-year-old woman, Martha Avila, was killed Friday when a Tesla Model 3 operating on an automated driving assistance system crashed into her home in Katy, Texas.
The high-speed collision occurred around 8 p.m., with the vehicle breaching a brick wall and striking Avila inside her residence. She was transported to a hospital via medical helicopter but was later pronounced dead.
The driver, identified as Michael Butler, is reportedly cooperating with the ongoing investigation and showed no signs of impairment at the scene. Avila’s daughter, Jennifer Barbour, shared surveillance footage of the incident, describing her mother as a healthy, vibrant individual whose life was tragically cut short.
While Tesla’s Autopilot feature remains a popular driver-assistance tool, it has faced significant scrutiny regarding performance and safety standards. As authorities continue their investigation, the family has initiated a fundraiser to assist with funeral costs and temporary housing.
