Philippine lawmakers vote to impeach VP Sara Duterte

Manila:The Philippine House of Representatives has voted 257 to 25 to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte for a second time, citing graft, corruption, and an alleged assassination plot against President Ferdinand Marcos.
This escalation follows a fractured alliance between the nation’s two most powerful political families, stemming from disputes over cabinet portfolios and the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
While a Senate conviction would bar her from office for life, an acquittal remains highly possible. Minutes before the vote, the Senate elected Duterte ally Alan Peter Cayetano as its new president, and the chamber remains stacked with loyalists following the 2025 mid-term elections.
Despite favorable Senate optics, analysts suggest the public presentation of corruption evidence may permanently damage Duterte’s 2028 presidential aspirations, as public perception remains highly sensitive to financial misconduct.
