Portugal will look to get their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign back on track tonight when they face Uzbekistan in Group K at NRG Stadium in Houston, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm Bahrain time.
Roberto Martínez’s side were left frustrated in their opening match after being held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo, despite dominating possession for long spells. Portugal controlled large phases of the game but struggled to break down a compact defence, registering just seven shots and only one on target.
The lack of cutting edge was an unexpected concern for a squad packed with attacking talent, led by Cristiano Ronaldo. Only a handful of teams recorded fewer shots on matchday one, underlining the need for a more incisive display against Uzbekistan.
The Uzbeks are also searching for their first World Cup victory after losing 3-1 to Colombia in their opening fixture on their tournament debut. Despite the result, head coach Fabio Cannavaro praised his side’s response after a nervous start.
Portugal’s preparations have been largely positive, although Benfica defender Tomás Araújo trained separately as he continues his recovery programme after featuring in the opening match.
Much of the spotlight will again fall on Ronaldo. The 41-year-old completed the full 90 minutes against DR Congo and came under scrutiny following a quiet performance, but his importance within the squad remains significant. Teammate Francisco Conceicao recently praised Ronaldo's relentless drive and professionalism, qualities that continue to set the standard for Portugal's younger generation.
Portugal enter the match as clear favourites, but a victory alone may not be enough to silence concerns following their underwhelming opener. Martinez will be looking for a sharper display in the final third against an Uzbekistan side determined to prove it belongs on football's biggest stage.
