Six-Month Deadline for Food Trucks to Comply with Rules

Food truck operators in Bahrain have been given a six-month deadline to regularise their status under updated regulatory requirements aimed at improving organisation, safety standards and urban planning.
The grace period began on June 21 and will run until December 21, 2026, allowing operators time to complete necessary procedures and comply with existing rules governing the sector.
Joint government campaign
Northern Municipality Director-General and food truck regulation project coordinator Mohammed Saad Al Sahli said the initiative is being implemented through coordinated efforts between multiple government bodies.
He said the campaign aims to strengthen compliance, enhance public health and safety standards, and maintain the visual and urban organisation of areas where food trucks operate.
Food trucks have seen significant expansion in Bahrain in recent years, driven largely by young entrepreneurs entering the food and beverage sector through flexible, low-cost business models.
What was once considered a seasonal activity has now become a growing part of the local small business and consumer landscape, particularly with demand for mobile cafés, specialty food concepts and street-style dining experiences.
However, authorities note that this rapid growth has also increased calls for clearer regulation and better site organisation.
Officials said the current enforcement drive follows complaints and observations received from citizens and institutions regarding some food truck locations and their impact on public spaces and urban appearance.
Authorities stressed that they are addressing these concerns through legal and regulatory measures while ensuring the continued operation of the sector in a more structured and sustainable manner.
Clear rules on operating locations
While one government body handles licensing the activity itself, the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture is responsible for determining where food trucks can operate.
Rules include obtaining property owner approval, avoiding road reserves, and not parking directly in front of residential buildings.
Officials said the six-month grace period is intended to give operators sufficient time to adjust their operations and continue their businesses in compliance with approved regulations.
