Singles Duo March On

Bahrain’s Mohamed Saleh and Rashid Sanad both advanced in the men’s singles table tennis competition at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya yesterday.

Saleh recovered from dropping the opening game to defeat Bangladesh’s Ramhimlian Bawm 4-1 at Sky Hall Toyota.

After going down 9-11, the Bahraini took control to win the next four 11-2, 11-4, 11-8 and 11-8.

Sanad followed with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Pakistan’s Taha Bilal, edging the opener 13-11 before taking the remaining games 11-4, 11-5 and 11-7.

Their singles victories came a day after both players also enjoyed success in the men’s doubles, where two pairings return to action today.

Mohammed Alaali and Sayed Mahfoodh face Singapore’s Chew Zhe Yu and Josh Chua in the round of 32 at 5am after opening their campaign with a 3-0 win over Pakistan.

Saleh and Sanad then meet Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Hsien-chia and Hung Jing-kai at 5.45am, having also progressed with a 3-0 victory over Kyrgyzstan.

Both matches will take place at Sky Hall Toyota, with places in the last 16 at stake. The competition continues through the weekend before concluding on Monday, when the men’s singles semi-finals and final will be contested.
