Brussels: Belgian police arrested seven people connected with an attack on a synagogue in the eastern city of Liège earlier this year, authorities said on Friday, marking a breakthrough in an investigation into what officials have described as an antisemitic act.
Early on March 9, an explosion damaged a building across the street and shattered the synagogue's windows. Federal prosecutors took up the case, handling it as a suspected terrorism-related incident even though no casualties were reported.
Police said the seven suspects were identified and arrested after months of inquiry, but they refused to reveal details about their names or suspected motives. The investigation is in progress.
Belgian officials strongly condemned the attack, calling it a direct attack on the country's Jewish minority. Following the incident, Belgium heightened safety around synagogues, Jewish schools, and other community locations due to growing fears about antisemitic acts.
