Washington DC: Thousands of people took to the streets across the United States on May Day, calling for stronger protections for workers and sweeping economic reforms. Demonstrations were held in dozens of cities, bringing together labour unions, immigrant rights groups and activists demanding fair wages, better working conditions and greater social protections.

Many protests were part of a wider “economic blackout” movement, with participants urged to avoid work, school and shopping to highlight the power of collective action. Rallies featured calls to tax the wealthy, reform immigration policies and address growing inequality. Organisers said the demonstrations reflect rising frustration over the cost of living, stagnant wages and government policies seen as favouring corporations over workers.

Actions ranged from marches and walkouts to protests outside major institutions, with some events leading to arrests. The nationwide mobilisation is part of a broader push to build momentum for long-term labour reforms, with activists aiming to strengthen worker rights and expand social and economic protections in the years ahead.
