NASA announces 3 uncrewed missions to the moon this year to prepare to build a base

Washington, DC: NASA has announced plans to launch a trio of uncrewed robotic flights by the end of this year, marking the critical opening phase of its long-term initiative to establish a permanent human foothold on the moon.
Named Moon Base 1, 2, and 3, these flights will focus heavily on surveying the lunar South Pole region, conducting scientific research, and evaluating emerging infrastructure.
The initial phase running through 2029 will include 25 launches and 21 landings, delivering approximately 4 metric tons of vital cargo to the lunar surface. Private aerospace partners, including Blue Origin, Astrobotic, and Intuitive Machines, have been contracted to supply the landing hardware and rovers necessary for these complex operations.
This foundational phase will pave the way for a second phase focused on assembling semi-permanent infrastructure by 2032, ultimately facilitating a continuous human presence and regular crew rotations in the 2030s.
