Hong Kong: Hong Kong has opened a new passenger terminal at its international airport as part of a major expansion plan aimed at increasing passenger capacity and strengthening the city’s position as a leading global aviation hub.

The newly opened Terminal 2 began operations with its first departing flight to Shanghai early Tuesday morning. The terminal is expected to gradually accommodate around 15 mainly low-cost and regional airlines, helping ease congestion at the airport’s main terminal.

Airport authorities said the expansion is part of a multi-billion-dollar project designed to increase annual passenger capacity to 100 million travelers. The development also includes a third runway that is already operational.

Officials say the new terminal relies heavily on technology, including facial recognition systems, artificial intelligence and automated check-in services, allowing passengers to move through the airport with fewer manual procedures.

The expansion comes as airports across Asia compete to attract more international passengers and cargo traffic. Hong Kong is seeking to strengthen its position against major regional hubs such as Singapore and Dubai, especially as travel patterns continue to shift due to ongoing tensions affecting some Middle East air routes.

Industry data ranked Hong Kong among the world’s busiest international airports last year, although it remained behind larger hubs in Dubai and Singapore in total passenger capacity.
