Jakarta: Indonesian rescuers have resumed a dangerous mission on Halmahera island to recover the bodies of three hikers killed during an eruption of Mount Dukono.
The victims, two Singaporeans and one Indonesian, were near the crater when the volcano erupted Friday morning, sending ash 10 kilometres into the sky.
The group reportedly ignored a four-kilometre exclusion zone and warning signs to enter the restricted area. While seventeen other climbers were rescued safely, search efforts for the deceased involve over 100 personnel and drones.
The operation remains precarious as the volcano continues to erupt, spewing further ash columns on Saturday. Singapore’s foreign ministry is currently coordinating assistance for the affected families.
