US Orders Withdrawal of 5,000 Troops from Germany Amid Iran War Rift

The United States has ordered the withdrawal of around 5,000 troops from Germany, highlighting growing tensions with European allies over the ongoing Iran war.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the move reflects a reassessment of military deployments as disagreements deepen over strategy in the conflict.

The move follows sharp disagreements between Washington and Berlin, after German leaders criticised the US strategy in the conflict, prompting a strong response from President Donald Trump.

The Pentagon said the troop reduction will take place over the next 6 to 12 months, bringing US military presence in Germany back to levels seen before 2022.

Germany currently hosts one of the largest US military deployments in Europe, making the decision significant for NATO and regional security dynamics.

The withdrawal is also seen as part of a broader push by Washington to pressure European allies to take on a greater role in their own defence, while divisions over the Iran conflict continue to widen.

The move has raised concerns among analysts and lawmakers, who warn it could deepen transatlantic tensions and impact NATO unity at a critical time.
