BDF-RMS’s treatment lead to Mechanic’s speedy recovery

Manama : A Formula 1 mechanic is fully mobilized and recovering extremely well after a horrific pit stop incident that shocked fans worldwide, thanks to the fast acting orthopedic team at Bahrain Defence Force Royal Medical Services (BDF-RMS) Military Hospital.

The pit crew mechanic arrived by ambulance to the BDF-RMS Military Hospital’s emergency room at 9:00pm on April 8th and was found to have open comminuted fractures of the tibia and fibula in his left leg. He was stabilized in the emergency room, and immediately shifted to the Operating Theatre, where he was placed under spinal anesthesia.

The orthopedic team, headed by Senior Consultant Orthopedic and Trauma surgeon Dr. Ali Hasan Al Majed, thoroughly cleaned the wound and fixed the fracture with a titanium intramedullary nail in a procedure that lasted one and a half hours from 11:30pm until 1:00am.

The surgery was extremely successful with minimal blood loss, and the patient was up and mobilized less than 24 hours after the incident, thanks to the outstanding leadership and directions of the Director of the Royal Medical Services Major General (Prof) Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al-Khalifa, and fast acting response from the BDF-RMS emergency department, orthopedic and physiotherapy teams.
