Teen Innovators Build Voice-Controlled Home
Three students from Shaikh Abdullah bin Isa Secondary Industrial School for Boys have designed a smart home model that allows household devices to be controlled remotely using voice commands.
The students — Hood Salah Ahmed, Hassan Abbas Ali and Hadi Khalil Ebrahim — from the Electronics Department, said the project uses a Raspberry Pi as a local server connected to electronic circuits that control household devices.
The team also developed a web interface using HTML, CSS and JavaScript, allowing users to switch lights and fans on and off, control the air conditioner, open and close doors, and perform other functions.
The project went through several stages, starting with planning, selecting the idea and preparing an initial design. The students then built the house model in the school workshop, developed and programmed the electronic circuits, and integrated and tested the system before documenting the results.
The project was carried out under the supervision of teacher Mohammed Mahdi Hassan.
The team said practical tests showed that the model successfully performed the different control functions and made household devices easier to use, particularly for people with disabilities and older adults, while reducing the need to operate switches and electrical loads directly.
The project reflects the Ministry of Education’s efforts to develop technical and vocational education at secondary level and encourage students to create projects that serve the community and develop their interest in entrepreneurship.
