Government opens probe into gym deaths

Manama : The government has ordered a probe into the recent tragic deaths at a gym in the Capital Governorate.

The decision was taken following the intervention of HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, HM the King’s Representative for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports President and Bahrain Olympic Committee President.

“We have directed the Bahrain Olympic Committee to communicate with the concerned bodies to form a committee to find out the causes of the deaths,” said HH Shaikh Nasser in a press statement yesterday.

Instructions were given to the team to submit their findings as soon as possible.

HH Shaikh Nasser has also asked the committee to coordinate with the concerned parties to issue new safety requirements and legislation. “This is important to reduce injuries and ensure the safety of visitors and users of these gyms,” Shaikh Nasser said.

Instructions were given to enhance supervision at the gyms to monitor the usage of food supplements and drugs.

“The staff at gyms should be trained in first aid and CPR,” Shaikh Nasser said stressing the importance of health and safety measures.

Jaffar Al Mulla, 39, and Hassan Shamlooh, 54, both died while working out at a gym in Tubli in the Capital Governorate. Medical examiners attributed both deaths to cardiac arrests.
