Court upholds jail terms in drug peddling case

ManamaThree Pakistani involved in a drug smuggling case have had their life sentences upheld by the Court.

The incident happened on April 9, 2015, when one of the defendants was arrested at Bahrain International Airport by customs officers who suspected him to be smuggling drugs.

He was inspected but nothing illegal was found in his possession or inside his luggage. However, under intense questioning, he finally admitted to hiding capsules in his stomach. Further investigations led the police to his co-accomplices, also Pakistani nationals, who were waiting for him outside the airport.

All three were X-rayed and police discovered that two of them had swallowed 150 capsules. The 32-year-old was found to be having 65 capsules weighing 500 grams in his stomach, while his accomplice was carrying 85 capsules.

The man told prosecutors he was promised 85,000 Pakistani rupees (BD315) for helping to smuggle the drugs into the country.
