80 Nations Demand Hormuz Reopening

Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani joined a media briefing at the United Nations headquarters in New York, where Bahrain and other countries condemned Iran’s continued attacks in the region and called for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817.
The participating countries also called for the immediate and full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the need to ensure safe and unrestricted maritime passage in accordance with international law.
The briefing was attended by foreign ministers, permanent representatives to the United Nations and representatives of regional and international organisations.
In his remarks, Dr. Al Zayani said the threat remains serious and has continued to worsen since a similar media statement was issued five months ago.
He referred to an attack on a vessel off the coast of Oman on Wednesday that resulted in the death of an Indian national. He also said Houthi militias had earlier launched six ballistic missiles towards Saudi Arabia.
Dr. Al Zayani extended his condolences to India and the victim’s family, as well as to those who have lost their lives as a result of the ongoing threat. He also reaffirmed Bahrain’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia in confronting the attacks.
The minister then read a joint statement on behalf of 80 UN member states supporting Resolution 2817 and condemning Iran’s continued attacks against neighbouring countries in the region.
The statement said the attacks were disrupting international trade and threatening global energy security and the world economy. It also said Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz pose risks to international security and freedom of navigation.
The statement further condemned the Houthis’ decision to resume military operations in Yemen and their continued attacks against Saudi Arabia, as well as attacks in the Red Sea.
It warned that further Houthi advances towards the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could increase risks to international shipping, maritime security and global trade through the strategically important waterway.
The 80 countries called for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened urgently and completely, allowing ships to pass safely and without obstruction, including without unlawful transit fees, conditions or other burdens.
The statement stressed that such measures should comply with international law, as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
It also warned that disruption of global trade routes and pressure on the international food system could drive up prices, increase hunger, reduce agricultural output and deepen hardship, particularly among vulnerable communities worldwide.
Bahrain-Pakistan Talks
Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani met Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The two sides reviewed the longstanding ties between Bahrain and Pakistan and discussed ways to strengthen political, economic, trade and development cooperation.
The meeting also covered regional developments, efforts to promote security and stability, and Pakistan’s mediation efforts to de-escalate tensions and resume US-Iran negotiations. They discussed the impact of disrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb on international trade and the global economy, while stressing continued coordination during their countries’ UN Security Council memberships.
Grossi Discusses UN Candidacy
Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani met International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi in New York. Grossi outlined his executive programme for his candidacy, nominated by Argentina, for UN Secretary-General for the 2027–2031 term. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly session.
Dr. Al Zayani wished Grossi success in his campaign and highlighted the important role of the UN Secretary-General in advancing the organisation’s efforts to promote global development and prosperity and safeguard international peace and security.
Bahrain, Marshall Islands Establish Ties
Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani met Marshall Islands Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Kalani Kaneko in New York on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly session. The two ministers discussed relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The meeting also covered regional developments, efforts to promote security and stability, and the impact of disrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb on energy and food supplies and international trade. The two sides also signed a joint statement establishing diplomatic relations between Bahrain and the Marshall Islands.
Bahrain-Germany Relations Discussed
Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani met German Foreign Minister Dr. Johann Wadephul at the UN headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The two ministers reviewed the close friendship between Bahrain and Germany and discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation across various fields to support shared interests.
They also exchanged views on regional developments, including the impact of disrupted maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz on international trade and the global economy, as well as other issues of mutual interest.
