London: Uber and British artificial intelligence startup Wayve have launched London's first robotaxi service, which will provide supervised self-driving rides on the city's streets.
The initial rollout includes fewer than 20 electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Wayve's AI driving technology. Passengers can match with automobiles using the Uber app at regular prices.
Throughout the initial phase, a trained and licensed safety driver will be behind the wheel, ready to take charge if necessary. Fully driverless operations will require additional governmental approval.
The launch is a significant step toward progress in London's acceptance of autonomous vehicles and Wayve's first public deployment of its AI Driver technology. The companies intend to progressively expand the service as testing and regulatory processes proceed.
