Lindsay Clancy Trial: Second Jury Deadlock Raises Prospect of Mistrial

Plymouth, United States: A US judge ordered jurors to resume deliberations after a second jury deadlock in the Lindsay Clancy triple murder trial on Wednesday, raising the prospect of a mistrial. 

Judge William Sullivan issued a last-resort instruction on the fifth day of deliberations to encourage the 12-member panel to reach a unanimous verdict.

If the jury remains unable to agree, the court will declare a mistrial, leaving prosecutors to decide whether to retry the case with a new jury.

The panel is weighing potential verdicts ranging from first-degree murder and manslaughter to not guilty by lack of criminal responsibility.

Clancy, a 36-year-old former nurse, faces life in prison without parole for the January 2023 strangling deaths of her three young children.

She pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, claiming postpartum psychosis caused her to hear a voice ordering her to kill them.

Following the killings, Clancy jumped from a second-story window in an apparent suicide attempt that left her paralyzed from the waist down. The five-week trial featured over 80 witnesses and sparked widespread debate over maternal mental health.
