Guatemala’s Fuego Volcano Erupts, Forcing Mass Evacuations

San Juan Alotenango, Guatemala: Guatemala’s Fuego volcano erupted on Tuesday, forcing hundreds of residents on its slopes to evacuate their homes as emergency services declared a red alert.
The mountain spewed rivers of lava and sent massive ash plumes towering six kilometers into the sky, threatening communities less than 100 kilometers from Guatemala City.
At least 500 residents from villages on the volcano's flanks were transported to emergency shelters set up in nearby towns. The highest-level red alert now covers three regions with a population of 1.6 million people.
The intense eruption lasted for 23 straight hours, prompting officials to suspend in-person school classes and temporarily close a major highway leading to the historic city of Antigua.
Located on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire,’ Fuego is Central America's most active volcano. While volcanic intensity has begun to ease slightly, caution remains high among local families, mindful of a devastating 2018 eruption that killed 215 people.
