Japan Searches for Missing Global Hawk Drone Over Sea of Japan

Tokyo: Japan’s Air Self-Defence Force has initiated a search for an RQ-4B Global Hawk surveillance drone following loss of contact with the unmanned aircraft over the Sea of Japan on Tuesday.
The drone vanished from radar approximately 50 kilometres off the coast of Tottori Prefecture around 1 p.m. local time. Japan’s defence authorities initiated a search operation and conducted inspections for any potential damage or effects in the surrounding area.
Japan operates three Global Hawks, aircraft designed for high-altitude long-duration surveillance missions that can last approximately 36 hours. Since 2022, the aircraft have been stationed at Misawa Air Base.
Japanese authorities have labelled the flight as a training mission, though the precise objective of the aircraft’s operation remains undisclosed. Reports also indicated that debris thought to originate from the drone was later found at sea.
