Trump nominates Texas lawmaker Wesley Hunt as US ambassador to Saudi Arabia

Washington: US President Donald Trump has nominated Texas Republican Congressman Wesley Hunt to become the next US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, filling a post that has remained vacant since the start of his second term.
Hunt, a US Army veteran, served in Iraq and Saudi Arabia before entering politics. He is not seeking re-election to the House after an unsuccessful campaign for the US Senate.
His nomination must be approved by the US Senate before he can take up the post in Riyadh.
Hunt would arrive in Saudi Arabia at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East. Months of war with Iran have increased fears of a wider regional conflict, while Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels have carried out attacks on Saudi Arabia.
