Shipping Turmoil Deepens Hunger Crisis in Sudan and Yemen

Rome: The World Food Program (WFP) warned that disruptions to vital shipping routes are worsening hunger in Sudan and Yemen as conflict and maritime insecurity impair supply of food, fuel, and fertiliser.
In Sudan, where almost 19.5 million people are starving, rising fuel and transportation expenses are raising the cost of essential food. According to the World Food Program, the cost of a basic diet has increased by about 40% since February.
Yemen is particularly susceptible because it imports almost 90% of its food. Attacks and security hazards around the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb are forcing ships to reroute, delaying cargo and increasing shipping expenses.
The disruption is also affecting fertilizer supplies across Africa and Asia. WFP warns that delayed or reduced fertilizer deliveries could lead to smaller harvests in the months ahead, further tightening food supplies and increasing pressure on already vulnerable populations.
