UN Urges International Investigators’ Access to Gaza After Bodies Found

Gaza: The United Nations is calling for international investigators to be allowed into Gaza after bodies were found at locations such as hospitals, and is demanding independent and transparent inquiries into how the deaths occurred.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk stated that specialists carrying forensic expertise should be permitted to inspect the sites and safeguard evidence. The UN has emphasized that hospitals are afforded special protection under international humanitarian law and that deliberately targeting civilians or detainees may amount to a war crime.
The calls come after reports that hundreds of bodies have been recovered from mass graves at Gaza’s Nasser and Al-Shifa hospitals. Palestinian authorities said some bodies exhibited indications of possible mistreatment, while Israel denied any involvement of its forces in the deaths.
The UN has urged investigators to have open access in order to determine the circumstances of the deaths and ensure evidence is preserved.
