Taking too many vitamins can cause health problems, experts warn

Dubai: Taking many vitamin and mineral supplements at the same time without medical supervision can pose major health concerns, experts warn, as the growing popularity of wellness products causes many individuals to consume nutrients they may not require.
While vitamins are necessary for the body, taking multiple supplements might lead to an excessive intake of the same nutrient. Many multivitamins, energy boosters, health supplements, and beauty products have overlapping chemicals, which raises the risk of accidental overdose.
Since the body stores fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K rather than rapidly eliminating excess amounts, these are especially problematic. Excessive amounts can have an impact on organs including the kidneys and liver. Overconsumption of some water-soluble vitamins and minerals can also result in negative reactions, such as nausea, digestive issues, symptoms related to the nerves, and other issues.
The risks can be greater for people who take supplements alongside prescription medicines, as some vitamins and minerals could cause issues with how certain medications work.
Experts advise consumers check the labels on all supplements they take and avoid combining products with similar chemical substances. Supplements should be used to treat the documented deficiencies or a specific medical need, not to replace a well-balanced diet.
The caution comes as health professionals continue to remind consumers that more vitamins do not always equal greater health. A medical professional can assess whether supplementation is required and propose an appropriate dosage.
