Venezuela Double Earthquake Death Toll Climbs To 5,346

Caracas: The death toll from the double earthquakes that struck Venezuela nearly a month ago has risen to 5,346, according to official figures released on Tuesday. National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez confirmed an increase of 68 deaths, while the total number of injured remains at 16,740.

The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes, which occurred on June 24, struck the northern coastal regions hardest. La Guaira, a state located just outside the capital city of Caracas, suffered significant devastation. Official records indicate that over 850 buildings were damaged and 190 collapsed completely.

While government officials have not released figures regarding missing persons, United Nations estimates suggest up to 50,000 people may still be unaccounted for under the rubble. Seismologists have recorded 1,405 aftershocks in the month following the initial tremors.

More than 23,000 people have been displaced, forcing survivors into makeshift camps established in stadiums and along sidewalks. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced housing plans, pledging to construct over 4,000 homes to support affected families.
