Nairobi : Three people have been killed in protests over Kenya's controversial Ebola quarantine facility, where seven US aid workers have been placed in isolation despite a court order suspending the centre's operation.
The aid workers, employed by Samaritan's Purse, had been working in Ebola-affected areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The US State Department said they are asymptomatic, have tested negative for Ebola and were transferred to Kenya as a precaution.
The quarantine centre at Laikipia Air Base has faced strong public opposition, with many Kenyans objecting to the arrival of potential Ebola carriers in a country that has never recorded an Ebola case.
A Kenyan court had ordered the project to be halted and found Health Minister Aden Duale in contempt for failing to immediately stop it. However, the US State Department said Kenyan authorities had authorised the aid workers' transfer to the facility.
