Wellington: Following a strong earthquake off the western coast of New Zealand's South Island on Thursday, authorities lowered the tsunami warning to an advisory. The quake was initially assessed at magnitude 6.3 but was subsequently revised to 5.9, causing officials to reduce the hazard level.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) stated that there is no longer a risk of extensive coastal flooding. However, it cautioned that strong and irregular currents, as well as unexpected surges, could continue to cause hazards in some coastal locations. Residents were advised to stay away from beaches, harbours, rivers, and estuaries until authorities officially declare them safe.
A significant area of the lower South Island was affected by the earthquake that occurred close to Te Anau in Fiordland. While rescue organisations continue to monitor earthquakes and coastal conditions, authorities are evaluating infrastructure for potential damage. There have been no initial reports of significant damage or fatalities.
