Berlin: Uber has agreed to buy German food delivery company Delivery Hero for €12.7 billion ($14.8 billion) in cash, making it one of the largest takeovers in the food delivery industry and Uber's largest purchase to date.
The acquisition will considerably expand Uber's worldwide delivery footprint, bringing Delivery Hero's operations to dozens of markets across Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. The combined operation is planned to operate in 99 countries, boosting Uber's position against global competitors in food delivery and fast commerce.
The board of Delivery Hero has unanimously approved the offer, with shareholders scheduled to receive €41.50 per share in cash. Uber has promised to preserve Delivery Hero's Berlin headquarters and crew until at least 2029, investing €2 billion in Germany over the following five years.
The acquisition indicates continuing consolidation in the online food delivery market, as companies seek greater size, more profitability, and a wider global reach in the face of fierce competition and rising operating expenses. The transaction is expected to finalise in the second half of 2027, pending regulatory clearances.
