Vancouver: Canada midfielder Ismael Kone will miss the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after undergoing successful surgery on a fractured tibia and fibula suffered during his team's victory over Qatar.
Canada Soccer said Kone underwent surgery in Vancouver on Friday and is expected to make a full recovery.
The 23-year-old was injured in the second half of Canada's 6-0 win when a challenge from Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo left him with severe fractures in his lower left leg. Madibo was later sent off after a video review and subsequently apologised to Kone.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch said the surgery was completed successfully and praised the medical team that treated the midfielder.
Kone's injury is a major setback for Canada as the team prepares for a crucial Group B match against Switzerland, with both sides level on four points after two games.
Teammate Nathan Saliba paid tribute to Kone after scoring against Qatar by holding up a replica of the midfielder's shirt during his celebration.
