Tokyo: An ‘extremely intelligent’ bear remains at large in northern Japan after injuring four people and systematically evading capture.
The animal went on a rampage at two factories in Fukushima, wounding three workers and a local resident.
Following the attacks, the bear took shelter inside a factory building, where it successfully dodged hunters and emergency responders equipped with tranquilizer guns and traps.
Fukushima City Mayor Yuki Baba noted that claw marks and evidence at the scene indicate the animal had incredibly unlatched a window on its own to escape the containment.
Officials also believe the highly capable animal turned on a water tap to drink while hiding inside the compound. This elusive escape comes amid a historic spike in human-bear conflicts across Japan as the animals increasingly emerge from hibernation.
