Turkey and Pakistan to deploy forces to Saudi Arabia under new defence pact

Turkey and Pakistan will move to rapidly deploy military forces and capabilities to Saudi Arabia under a new mutual defence agreement, according to a joint statement issued by the three countries.

The announcement followed an emergency meeting in Riyadh, where representatives of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan discussed recent attacks targeting the Kingdom, including incidents affecting the areas around the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The three countries agreed to begin implementing their collective defence commitments and take the necessary measures to ensure the rapid deployment of agreed military forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement in August, committing the three countries to support one another if any member comes under attack.

The latest move comes as Saudi Arabia faces continued attacks linked to Yemen’s Houthi movement, which has targeted areas including Saudi cities, oil infrastructure and maritime routes.

The joint statement did not specify the size or operational role of the Turkish and Pakistani forces to be deployed.
